Her birth name is Halle Maria Berry (Maria Halle Berry; August 14, 1966). As a model, she competed in several beauty contests, taking second at Miss USA 1986 and sixth at Miss World 1986. In 1992, she starred with Eddie Murphy in the romantic comedy Boomerang, which led to roles in The Flintstones (1994) and Bulworth (1998) as well as Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999), for which she received a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award.
The 2000s saw Berry establish herself as one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses.
In the romantic drama Monster’s Ball (2001), she played a struggling widow who wins the Academy Award for Best Actress. This award was the only one won by a woman of color and was the first to go to a Black woman. In addition to playing Storm in four X-Men films (2000-2014), she played a robber’s henchwoman in the thriller Swordfish (2001), Bond girl Jinx in Die Another Day (2002), and Catwoman (2004), for which she received US$12.5 million as the title character.
