Venkaiah Naidu is an Indian politician who has served as the country’s vice president since 2017 after being elected as the 13th and current president on 1 July 1949. Prior to joining the Modi Cabinet, he served as housing, urban poverty alleviation, urban development and information minister. In addition to being a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he also served as its national president from 2002 to 2004. As Minister for Rural Development under the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he held the position from 1996 to 2002. On 11 August 2017, he was sworn in as vice president and chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

 

Venkaiah Naidu’s Early life

During his schooling, he attended Zilla Parshad High School, Bucchireddy Palem, and graduated from VR College, Nellore, with a bachelor’s degree in politics and diplomatic studies. He married Ramanamma in 1974. After studying law at Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam, he took a specialization in international law. During his college days, he was a swayamsevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and joined the ABVP. Student leaders at Andhra University elected him as their president. As a leader of the Jai Andhra movement in 1972, he came to prominence. The Vijayawada movement was led by Kakani Venkata Ratnam, while the Nellore agitation was led by Naidu until it was ended a year later.

YNCS was established in 1974 by Jayaprakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti of Andhra Pradesh. After protesting against the Emergency on the streets, he was imprisoned. He served as its youth wing president between 1977 and 1980.

 

Venkaiah Naidu’s Background and Family

The late Shri Rangaiah Naidu and Smt. Venkaiah Naidu had M. Venkaiah Naidu on July 1st, 1949. Ramanamma. In Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, he was born to agriculturist parents in the village of Chavatapalem. Smt Usha and Shri Venkaiah Naidu married on 14th July, 1971, and they have two children. His affinity for common people, particularly farmers and people from the lower classes, came from his background as a member of a lower class family. “Back to the Villages” was the slogan he encouraged the party to adopt. Shri Venkaiah Naidu took an interest in politics since he was a child. In 1973, he was a student leader with the ABVP at VR High School. Shri Naidu gained fame for his outspoken personality and his skill at communication.

 

Venkaiah Naidu’s Education

In politics, Venkaiah Naidu has an unmatched interest. He has been interested in politics since he was a child. VR High School, Nellore was his high school. During his undergraduate studies, he majored in politics and diplomatic studies at V.R. College. Shri Naidu earned his Bachelor of Laws from Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam. He joined the BJP as a college student and served as an MLA in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He has published a number of articles in public and political interests, and he is an avid reader. His book Aluperugani Galam, Viraamamerugani Payanam was also published.

 

Venkaiah Naidu’s Political career

As a student leader and political figure, Naidu is known for his oratory skills, which he used to advocate for farmers and backward areas. His oratory skills and political activism launched his political career, which culminated in his elections as an MLA from Udaygiri constituency in Nellore district twice in 1978 and 1983. During his time with the BJP, he was one of the most popular leaders in the state.

A former BJP state and national official, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in 1998. In 2004 and 2010, he was re-elected to the Karnataka State Assembly. From 1996 to 2000, he served as the party’s spokesperson and was known for his knack for alliteration and metaphor. While most southern Indian politicians rarely speak Hindi, Naidu was able to address public rallies in northern India after learning the language.

As a minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government following the NDA election victory of 1999, he was well known for pushing aggressively for reforms in rural development to include the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

 

President of Bhartiya Janata Party 

Jana Krishnamurthi succeeded him as BJP National President in 2003. During the 28 January 2004 election, he was elected without opposition for a full three-year term. His resignation occurred 18 October 2004 as a result of the defeat of the BJP-led NDA in the 2004 elections. His successor was L. K. Advani. Yet he remained a major campaigner for the BJP as a senior vice-president. 

As a member of the opposition in February 2014, Naidu asked for special category state status for Andhra Pradesh. Prime Minister David Cameron accepted it, although the AP Reorganization Act did not include it.

 

Political Journey of Venkaiah Naidu

  • From 1977 to 1980, he was head of the Janata Party’s youth wing.
  • From 1978 to 1985, he served two consecutive terms in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
  • After becoming the General Secretary in 1985, he led the party in Andhra Pradesh for almost a decade. He became state party president in 1988.
  • Karnataka politician Naidu served a period of 14 years in the Rajya Sabha, representing the state three times.
  • During his tenure as Minister for Rural Development, Naidu served from 2000 to 2002.
  • His appointment as National Party President occurred in 2002.
  • Ministerial oaths were administered by Naidu on the 26th of May 2014.
  • During the election of the Vice-President of India, Shri Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu received the majority vote.
